Schedule Milestones are time points denoted on a project schedule, associated with events of great significance for this project (they can be also called target dates as milestones should be passed on right time, according to project plan). Normally, every project has the schedule with a number of pre-planned milestones indicating specific dates and time when:
- The project ends (project deadline);
- Project phases or stages end;
- The project management expects certain deliverables to be finished;
- Project results are to be presented to customers for acceptance;
- Project iterations end (in agile projects);
- Some important project events will happen;
- Project’s progression needs certain validation or review;
Schedule milestones can have three main statuses which define a way in which these milestones will be approached:
- Late (missed) milestones – the project team couldn’t meet the target date on certain milestone, so the working plan appears delayed. Mitigating actions should be done: for example the project schedule needs to be accelerated by adding more resources;
- Upcoming milestones – certain event is going to happen soon, so appropriate preparations need to take place, or the project management needs to make sure that appropriate deliverable will be ready just on time;
- Completed milestones – if the milestones are completed appropriately, then the project is on the right track;
