Process Action Team (PAT, can be also called Process Improvement Team) – it is an ad-hoc cross-functional workgroup that is formed to fight for quality in designated process areas. PAT is usually assembled from representatives of various departments of the organization, which are involved into interaction with a process that they seek improvements for. Normally PAT has a team leader, team members, and a team sponsor who is usually not a member of the team (also a special facilitator can play a role of mediator between the team and its sponsor).
Process Action Team may employ some improvement model, such as Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles, to manage their efforts. PAT is assembled to resolve a specific operational or management problem, hence it considers and recommends the best possible way to address the issue and improve the process quality. PAT typically works as an active agent of positive change within a TQM (Total Quality Management) program established at an enterprise. Once a targeted problem is solved, PAT should be dismissed.
