Process Safety Management is a set of formally approved and organized efforts and procedures for identifying process hazards, preventing accidents and reducing exposure to harmful situations and substances, within a process-based environment. It is a strategic activity that involves training and instructing of employees in accident prevention, accident response, emergency preparedness, and also use of protective equipment and clothing.
Process safety management aims to create a safe environment in which danger, risk, and threat of harm, injury, or loss to staff and/or property are minimized. It means that every piece of work involved in a process should be treated with great care to ensure health and safety of personnel involved in the process. Every worker should be instructed and trained in safety rules and requirements. Every worker should know what behaviors are proper to a given process scenario and how to act in case of emergency.
Process safety management is a required activity for any company that is involved in performing hazardous and risk activities and processes. Such companies should ensure employee adherence to their safety policies and procedures. They should also provide workplaces with appropriate safety equipment, systems and tools.
