Process Success Criteria refer to a combination of standards and rules against which some process can be judged and assessed. They help determine whether the process reaches its objectives, produces desired outcomes and ends up with expected performance. Success criteria help figure out if there is a gap between expectations and actual situation. For example, brand recognition is a marketing process success criterion that determines if the target audience can recognize a brand without being explicitly exposed to the firm's name.
There are two types of success criteria for a typical process:
- Performance-based success criteria, which consist of certain steps an individual can take to accomplish a process objective
- Outcome-based success criteria, which state what an individual will be able to do once a process objective is accomplished
Using success criteria is one of the key principles of process assessment. It is also a fundamental aspect of process improvement. Through applying success criteria to a process, it is possible to assess the performance and outcomes of this process and then perform an analysis to understand what improvement opportunities can be exploited.
