Process Understanding is a process of grasping the leverages, elements and parameters making the process efficient and effective: the Critical Process Parameters (CPP) affecting the Critical Quality Attributes (CQA). Process Understanding is necessary for reviewing and improving a business process. Besides these measurable matters it can be necessary to learn the following:

• Title of the process;
• Purpose of the process (why we need this process?);
• Scope (what the process includes and excludes?);
• Body of the process (where it starts and ends, what steps reside between?);
• Inputs (what must enter the process to put it in motion?);
• Outputs (what we expect to obtain in a result and during the process?);
• Controls (how we measure and administer the process?);
• Resources (what resources are consumed to make the process work?);
• Sub-processes (is there any embedded or cross-functional processes included);
• Accountabilities of the process to the organisation;
