Project Network is a distributed model of work to be completed in a project. Such a model includes a hierarchy of interdependent work elements (processes, tasks, activities) sequenced and prioritized to identify and define total effort of the project. Project network is usually built and designed with help of hierarchical diagrams and charts (project network diagram).
Project network includes multiple sequences of activities that determine one or another work element such as phase or process. The key condition for project network to be effective is that every activity sequence should provide a finite and measurable result and should never contain any circular references. If an activity sequence contains a circular reference, then it creates a closed loop which causes an endless cycle.
Project network diagram creates a visual representation of project network including activity sequences. It shows established dependencies betweens project tasks and processes. Dependencies are displayed as two-way arrows. Project network diagram is helpful in defining, documenting, analyzing and improving project tasks and activities. It is also called project flowchart.
