Project Purpose is the reason why an organization establishes a project: it is what a project mission is built around and what underlies project viability, so once the purpose of a project appears no more relevant this project loses its grounds and hence can be terminated. Actually, the project vision is a description of a situation which is expected after the project purpose is satisfied – the problems that the project was intended to resolve are resolved, hence its execution is finally successful and also its mission is fulfilled.
Project purpose is different from project objectives, as they are measurable targets that a project should achieve, while purpose is a project development driver (idea that you shape the whole project plan around) that can be explained in a statement of purpose – your description of how this project and efforts it includes are expected to rectify the current problematic situation – for example: “To transform an obsolete and inefficient way in which our Sales department currently works into a modern and efficient way by implementing specified IT technologies and increasing performance of salesmen”.
