Project Roadmap is a diagram or document that illustrates a high level plan of a project, including its key milestones, stages and goals to be achieved. It is different from WBS and from usual project plan: it is a format to express project plans in a clear, easy-to-grasp manner (in a quite lay terms) when approaching the executive boards and stakeholders. The features of project roadmap are:
- Expresses the project plans at a glance: highlights important milestones, gives a clear picture of what products to expect, and feasible time when these deliverables will be ready;
- Expounds the planned utilization of project resources: allocation of the budget, involvement of technologies, manpower, equipment, etc. Focuses on a few of the most costly project items;
- Makes emphasis on the most important issues to be resolved by the project and the benefits to be delivered with its realization (makes the worth of the project interesting to stakeholders);
- Reviews the most probable risks and their mitigation methods;
- Provides the stakeholders with understanding of what kind of inquire you escalate to them and what do you expect to obtain from them (sponsorship, managerial support, guidance, etc);
