Schedule Baseline is a fixed project timeline that is used for tracking progress upon the project plan and budget or contract performance, so it is utilized as a preplanned standard to measure the project performance in the major aspects. Schedule Baseline is “approved” version of the Project Schedule (it is taken as a standard to be followed). The purpose of baseline schedule is to keep all involved parties (the project customers and the project executers) up to date on a project’s progress – it is used to maintain consistency between customer expectations and contractor commitments. Project scope changes will invalidate the relevance of the original baseline schedule, so it will need to be revised and updated as appropriate (a new baseline schedule will be recreated to overwrite the old one). Baseline schedule, being a “frozen” plan, is continually compared against the actual project schedule, so any deviations from the baseline (such as delay or forestalling) can be timely detected and responded appropriately.
