Schedule Risk is a threat which endangers meeting an optimistic schedule on the project or any of its particular tasks. In other words it is a probability of some unwanted event which if occurs can make the duration of the work longer than it might take in normal conditions. Schedule risks, as well as other risks, are characterized by probability of their occurrence and severance of influence. The risks which are highly probable and hazardous in their impact are considered on mitigation and avoidance. The Schedule Risks are used in the following activities:
- Defining an optimistic schedule of a task or a project, which is almost a riskless variant of their estimation (the shortest one schedule where everything happens seamlessly);
- Defining a pessimistic schedule where the risks are severely affecting the duration of work (the most probable risks are considered as maximally hampering the duration of the work);
- Defining a realistic schedule which is obtained by revision of the optimistic schedule through a pessimistic one, along with risk mitigation and remediation applied (risks are soberly assessed and all possible steps to prevent and soften their impact are taken);
