Task Breakdown is a way to describe a task as a hierarchical structure of interconnected operations where the work is decomposed from general to specific matters. Actually task breakdown is a way of considering every task (aka a work package) as a mini-project which can be managed by means of project management such as building WBS (a work breakdown structure) to review all sub-tasks and operations included into the scope of a particular task.
Task breakdown structure may have the following modes:
- WBS that assists on developing a rational view of labor and skills required to complete the job (it shows the amount, composition, scope and character of work required on a task);
- Resource breakdown structure that demonstrates all equipment, supplies, information and tools involved into a working process at a task, so you can acquire and organize them beforehand;
- Risk breakdown structure that gives you a vision of threats endangering task performance from its start till its completion – it helps to evaluate them and to find appropriate mitigation methods;
